The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is a public central research university located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Telangana. Established in 1974, it is a largely residential institution offering programmes across the sciences, technology, medical sciences, economics, humanities, management studies and social sciences.
The university has a campus of about 930 hectares (2,300 acres) and accommodates more than 5,000 students with around 400 faculty members drawn from a range of disciplines. The campus is noted for its biodiversity, with over 734 species of flowering plants, 10 species of mammals, 15 species of reptiles and around 220 species of birds recorded on its grounds.
On 17 February 2020, the Ministry of Education officially recognised the University of Hyderabad as an Institution of Eminence (IoE). Under this designation, the university is provided with enhanced autonomy and funding intended to support its development as a teaching and research institution, and to strengthen its profile as a central university across the sciences, humanities and professional disciplines.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 Rankings, the University of Hyderabad was placed 18th among Indian universities and 26th overall, with a rank of 33rd in research and 74th in post-graduate engineering.
