The University of Allahabad is a central university located in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. Established on 23 September 1887 by an act of Parliament, it is recognised as an Institute of National Importance and is regarded as the fourth oldest modern university in India.
The institution traces its origins to Muir Central College, which was named after Sir William Muir, then Lieutenant Governor of the North-Western Provinces. In 1873, Muir put forward the idea of a central university at Allahabad, and the college that bore his name eventually evolved into the present university.
After functioning for several decades under various administrative arrangements, the university's status as a central university was re-established through the University of Allahabad Act, 2005, passed by the Parliament of India.
