United Spirits traces its lineage to McDowell & Company, a trading firm established in the 19th century that later moved into the production of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL). Under the UB Group, led by Vittal Mallya and subsequently his son Vijay Mallya, the spirits business expanded substantially through new product launches and acquisitions.
The company emerged in its modern form in the early 2000s following the consolidation of several spirits entities of the UB Group, including McDowell & Company, Herbertsons, Phipson Distillery and Triumph Distillers and Vintners. The merged entity was named United Spirits Limited.
United Spirits markets a wide portfolio of Indian and imported brands. Prominent Indian brands include:
Through its association with Diageo, USL also distributes international brands such as Johnnie Walker, Black & White, VAT 69, Smirnoff and Captain Morgan in the Indian market.
The company operates a network of owned and contracted distilleries and bottling units across multiple Indian states. Its products are sold through state-controlled and private liquor distribution channels, which vary widely under India's state-level excise regulations.
United Spirits is among the largest spirits companies in the world by sales volume, reflecting India's position as one of the biggest whisky-consuming markets globally. Its acquisition by Diageo marked one of the most significant foreign investments in the Indian consumer sector and integrated the Indian spirits market more closely with global production and distribution networks.
