Geography

Uluberia lies on the right bank of the Hooghly River in the southern part of Howrah district. The terrain is low-lying alluvial plain, characteristic of the Lower Gangetic Delta. The Damodar River flows through the southern part of the surrounding subdivision before joining the Hooghly nearby. The town is connected to Kolkata and the rest of the state by road and rail networks running along the western bank of the Hooghly.

Civic Administration

The town is administered by the Uluberia Municipality, which is responsible for local civic services including water supply, sanitation, roads, and public health. The municipal area is divided into wards, each represented by an elected councillor. Uluberia is also the administrative seat of the Uluberia subdivision, one of the subdivisions of Howrah district.

Transport

Uluberia is served by Uluberia railway station on the Howrah–Kharagpur line of the South Eastern Railway, providing frequent local and long-distance services. National Highway 16 (formerly NH 6), part of the Golden Quadrilateral, passes through the area, linking Uluberia with Kolkata to the east and the industrial belt of Kharagpur and beyond to the west. The town is also accessible by road from Howrah and via ferry connections across the Hooghly.

Economy

The Uluberia region has a long-standing industrial presence, with manufacturing units in sectors such as engineering, jute, textiles, chemicals, and food processing. The Birshibpur–Uluberia industrial corridor along the Hooghly hosts a number of factories, and the area benefits from proximity to the Kolkata Port and access to highway and rail freight.

Politics

Uluberia forms the core of the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency, which sends a member to the lower house of the Indian Parliament. The town also lies within the Uluberia North and Uluberia South Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
