Uday Merchant came from a Bombay-based business family that produced several cricketers, the most prominent being his elder brother Vijay Merchant, one of India's leading batsmen of the pre- and post-independence era. The family's association with Bombay cricket placed Uday within an environment in which the domestic game was developing rapidly through the Pentangular tournament and the Ranji Trophy.
Merchant was a first-class cricketer who appeared in domestic Indian cricket, principally representing Bombay in the Ranji Trophy. He played in an era when Bombay was emerging as the dominant force in Indian domestic cricket. He did not represent India in Test cricket.
Although overshadowed by his more famous brother, Uday Merchant is remembered as part of a generation of Bombay cricketers who contributed to the strong domestic tradition that became central to Indian cricket in the twentieth century.
