UTV Software Communications was founded by Ronnie Screwvala, and the group expanded over time from television content into films, animation, gaming, and broadcasting. UTV Motion Pictures emerged as the film-focused unit, handling production, co-production, marketing, and theatrical distribution of feature films across multiple languages.
In 2012, The Walt Disney Company completed the acquisition of UTV Software Communications, making UTV and its motion pictures division a part of Disney's Indian operations. The film label continued to release titles under the UTV Motion Pictures banner following the acquisition, before its activities were progressively integrated and scaled back as part of Disney's restructuring of its India business.
During its active years, UTV Motion Pictures was associated with a shift in Hindi film production towards corporatised studio-style operations, with structured development, marketing, and distribution pipelines. It was among the Indian studios that engaged systematically with international co-production models and contributed to the growth of multiplex-era cinema in India.
