Head represents Australia in Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He has held leadership positions in the Australian set-up across formats, having served as a co vice-captain and vice-captain in Tests over multiple stints. In 2024, he captained Australia in T20Is and served as vice-captain in ODIs.
Head was a key member of the Australian side that won the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final. He was adjudged Player of the Match in the final.
Head also played a central role in Australia's victory in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, where he was again named Player of the Match. With his innings, he became the second player ever to score a century while batting second in a Cricket World Cup final.
By scoring centuries in both the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, Head became the first player to score centuries in two consecutive ICC tournament finals within the same calendar year. The back-to-back Player of the Match awards in major ICC finals established him as one of the defining performers of Australia's 2023 white-ball and red-ball successes.
