Early career

Guppy (2016), directed by Johnpaul George, gave Tovino his first major leading role and was well received critically. The same year, he appeared in films including Oru Mexican Aparatha, where his performance as a college student leader drew attention from younger audiences. Godha (2017), a sports comedy directed by Basil Joseph, further established him as a bankable lead in Malayalam cinema.

Established years

From 2017 onwards, Tovino took on a range of roles across genres. Mayaanadhi (2017), directed by Aashiq Abu, paired him with Aishwarya Lekshmi and was acclaimed for its writing and performances. Theevandi (2018), directed by Fellini T. P., and Maradona (2018), directed by Vishnu Narayan, showcased his versatility. He also produced And the Oscar Goes To... Pan-Indian recognition

Kala (2021), directed by Rohith V. S., received widespread critical praise for its intense narrative and Tovino's central performance. Later in 2021, Minnal Murali, directed by Basil Joseph and released on Netflix, brought him pan-Indian and international recognition. The film, conceived as a Malayalam-language superhero origin story set in a rural Kerala village, was widely viewed and praised for its grounded approach to the superhero genre.

2018 (2023), directed by Jude Anthany Joseph and based on the Kerala floods of 2018, became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of its time and was selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
