The group traces its origin to Trinity Laboratories, a small pharmaceutical venture established by Uttambhai Mehta in Ahmedabad. The business was later renamed Torrent Pharmaceuticals and grew into one of India's leading drug manufacturers, with a particular focus on cardiovascular, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal therapies. Following Uttambhai Mehta, the group was led by his sons Sudhir Mehta and Samir Mehta, who chair the power and pharmaceutical businesses respectively.
The flagship company of the group, Torrent Pharmaceuticals manufactures and markets formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients in India and overseas, with significant operations in Germany, Brazil, the United States, and other markets. It has expanded through acquisitions in the Indian generics market, including the domestic formulation businesses of Elder Pharmaceuticals and Unichem Laboratories.
Torrent Power is an integrated electric utility engaged in generation, transmission, and distribution. It distributes electricity in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Surat in Gujarat, and operates licensed distribution franchises in cities including Bhiwandi, Agra, and Dahej. Its generation portfolio includes gas-based, coal-based, and renewable assets.
Torrent Gas operates in the city gas distribution sector, supplying piped natural gas to households and industries and compressed natural gas to vehicles across multiple geographical areas authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
Torrent Diagnostics, headquartered in Ahmedabad, provides clinical pathology and reference laboratory services.
The group's philanthropic activities are channelled largely through the UNM Foundation, named after founder Uttambhai N. Mehta, which supports initiatives in healthcare, education, and community welfare in Gujarat.
Torrent Group is among the prominent industrial houses of Gujarat and is regarded as one of India's notable diversified business groups, with a strong presence in regulated utility sectors and the domestic pharmaceutical market. Its dual leadership across pharmaceuticals and power has positioned the group as both a healthcare provider and a key infrastructure operator in western India.
