Titwala is situated on the banks of the Kalu river, in the relatively low-lying terrain that lies between Kalyan and the foothills leading towards Murbad and the Western Ghats. The surrounding area is a mix of agricultural land, brick kilns, and rapidly expanding residential townships, reflecting the suburbanisation of the outer MMR. Climatically, the town shares the tropical monsoon pattern of the Konkan, with heavy rainfall between June and September.
Titwala railway station is a stop on the Central Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, and lies on the route between Kalyan Junction and Kasara. Local EMU services connect the town to Kalyan, Thane, Dadar and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Road connectivity is provided through state and district roads linking Titwala with Kalyan, Ambivli, Shahad and Murbad. The town is served by buses operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and local civic transport.
The principal landmark of Titwala is the Siddhivinayak Mahaganapati Mandir, popularly known simply as the Titwala Ganpati temple. According to local tradition, the temple is associated with the legend of Shakuntala from the Mahabharata, and the present idol is said to have been recovered from a tank in the area during the 18th century. The temple draws large numbers of devotees, particularly on Tuesdays, on Sankashti Chaturthi, and during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival, when special trains and additional bus services are commonly arranged.
Titwala falls within the jurisdiction of local self-government bodies in the Kalyan taluka, and parts of its developed area are governed under the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) along with adjoining gram panchayats for outlying sections. For revenue and administrative purposes, the town is part of Thane district under the Konkan division of Maharashtra.
Titwala has historically been a small temple town and agricultural settlement. With the extension of suburban rail services and the growth of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, it has seen significant residential development, with new housing projects, schools and small commercial establishments coming up around the railway station. The local economy combines pilgrimage-related trade, retail, small-scale industry and an increasing share of commuters who travel daily to workplaces in Kalyan, Thane and Mumbai.
Titwala is significant primarily as a religious centre on account of the Mahaganapati Mandir, and as a transit point on the Central Line that links the inner suburbs of Mumbai with the Kasara–Igatpuri corridor. Its position on the urban edge of the MMR also makes it part of the wider conversation around peri-urban growth in the Mumbai region.
