The Sri Venkateswara Temple at Tirumala, situated on the Seshachalam hills, has received royal patronage from successive South Indian dynasties including the Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas and most prominently the Vijayanagara emperors, whose grants and renovations significantly expanded the shrine. Through the colonial period the temple was administered by the Mahants of the Hathiramji Mutt before being brought under formal state-supervised management in the early twentieth century.
TTD was constituted under the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams Act of 1932, which separated the management of the Tirumala temple complex from the Hathiramji Mutt and placed it under a committee. The institution has subsequently been governed under successive Andhra Pradesh charitable and religious endowments enactments, with the present framework derived from the state's Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act. The trust is administered by a Board, whose Chairperson is appointed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and day-to-day operations are headed by an Executive Officer drawn from the Indian Administrative Service or state civil services.
In addition to the principal hill shrine, TTD administers several connected temples in and around Tirupati and elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh, including:
TTD has also constructed and maintains Venkateswara temples in several Indian cities and overseas locations as part of its religious outreach.
TTD manages darshan arrangements, accommodation, prasadam distribution (notably the Tirupati laddu, which carries a Geographical Indication tag), the queue complex (Vaikuntam), tonsuring facilities at Kalyana Katta, and pilgrim transport on the Tirumala ghat roads.
The trust runs and supports several institutions, including Sri Venkateswara University-affiliated colleges, the Sri Venkateswara Vedic University, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), the BIRRD orthopaedic hospital, schools and Veda Pathasalas. It also operates the Sri Venkateswara Bhakti Channel (SVBC), a dedicated devotional television network.
Through its Publications Wing and the Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanams Press, TTD publishes religious, philosophical and Telugu literary works, including the monthly magazine Sapthagiri in multiple languages. The Sri Venkateswara Oriental Research Institute supports manuscript and Indological research.
TTD funds annadanam (free meals to pilgrims), the Nitya Annaprasadam scheme, mass marriages, free medical care and the Dharmagiri Veda Vijnana Peetham, alongside grants to temple renovation and propagation of Sanatana Dharma.
The Tirumala temple is regarded among the wealthiest religious institutions in the world by way of offerings (hundi collections), gold deposits and the volume of devotees received. TTD's scale of operations, including its hospitality, food production, transport and security functions, makes it one of the largest religious administrative bodies in India and a major employer in the Rayalaseema region.
