Geography

Tijara lies in the Mewat region, on the eastern fringe of the Aravalli range. The terrain around the town consists of low hills interspersed with cultivated plains. The town is connected by road to Alwar, the district headquarters, as well as to Bhiwadi and other towns in the industrial belt close to the Haryana border. Its position within the NCR has made it part of regional planning frameworks for the area south of Delhi.

History

Tijara has a long recorded history, with references in medieval chronicles relating to the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal period. The area formed part of the Mewat region historically associated with the Khanzada and Meo communities. During the medieval period, Tijara served at times as a regional centre, and it later came under the princely state of Alwar before being integrated into the Indian Union and the state of Rajasthan after Independence.

Tijara Jain Tirth

Tijara is widely known among the Digambar Jain community for the Shri Chandraprabhu Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra, also called Tijara Jain Tirth or Dehra Tijara. The pilgrimage centre is associated with an idol of Tirthankara Chandraprabhu, said to have been recovered from a mound in the area, and it has since developed into a major Jain shrine complex with temples, dharamshalas and facilities for pilgrims.

Economy

The local economy combines agriculture with small-scale trade and industry. Proximity to the Bhiwadi–Neemrana industrial cluster and to the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor has influenced employment patterns, with many residents engaged in manufacturing, transport and services in nearby industrial towns. Agriculture in the surrounding villages includes mustard, wheat, bajra and other regionally typical crops.

Administration and politics

Tijara is the headquarters of Tijara tehsil within Alwar district. It is also a Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituency for elections to the Rajasthan state legislature, and falls within the Alwar Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the Indian Parliament.

Transport

The town is connected by state highways to Alwar, Bhiwadi, Khairthal and Delhi-NCR towns. The nearest larger railway and road junctions are at Khairthal and Alwar, while road links via Bhiwadi provide access to National Highway corridors leading to Delhi and Jaipur.

Significance

Tijara's significance derives from three principal factors: its medieval historical role in the Mewat region, its status as a Digambar Jain pilgrimage centre, and its present-day position within the Alwar–Bhiwadi industrial and NCR planning area.
