Thiruvalluvar University is a public state university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002 (Tamil Nadu Act 32 of 2002). The university is named after the Tamil poet and sage Thiruvalluvar.
The institution originally began functioning as the Post Graduate Extension Centre of the University of Madras, operating from the Fort Campus in Vellore. Following its bifurcation from the University of Madras, Thiruvalluvar University was set up as an independent state university and shifted to a new campus at Serkadu, Vellore.
The university affiliates Arts and Science colleges in the region comprising the districts of Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore. In addition to teaching and research on its own campus, it functions as the affiliating authority for higher education in these northern districts of Tamil Nadu.
