Third Eye

Overview

The third eye, also referred to as the spiritual eye, mind's eye or inner eye, is an intangible eye usually depicted on the forehead and believed to provide perception beyond ordinary sight. It is a recurring concept in several Eastern spiritual traditions, where it is associated with inner awareness and heightened consciousness.

In Hinduism, the third eye is identified with the ajna or brow chakra. In both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, it is described as being located around the middle of the forehead, slightly above the junction of the eyebrows. It is regarded as a symbol of the enlightenment that practitioners seek to attain through meditation and disciplined spiritual practice.

Especially in Eastern spiritual practices, the third eye is understood as the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. It often serves as a symbolic representation of a state of enlightenment, marking a transition from outward sensory perception to inward contemplative awareness.

In various traditions, the third eye is associated with religious visions, clairvoyance, the ability to observe chakras and auras, precognition, and out-of-body experiences. These associations situate the concept within broader frameworks of meditative experience and esoteric belief, rather than as a physical organ.
