Thermax began as a venture associated with the Bhathena family and grew out of an earlier partnership that introduced industrial boiler technology to India. Over the decades, it broadened its portfolio from boilers and heaters into a diversified engineering group offering integrated solutions for industrial energy use and environmental management.
The company is widely associated with Anu Aga, who led Thermax through a period of restructuring, and her daughter Meher Pudumjee, who serves as chairperson. The Aga family remains the principal promoter group.
Thermax operates manufacturing facilities in India, including plants in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and has overseas units and subsidiaries serving markets in South-East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. The group works through several subsidiaries and joint ventures focused on specific technologies, including tie-ups with international partners for advanced power generation and emission control equipment.
Thermax is considered one of India's notable engineering enterprises in the clean energy and environmental solutions space. Its products in waste-heat recovery, biomass power and absorption cooling have contributed to industrial energy efficiency in India, and the company is frequently cited in discussions of indigenous capability in process engineering. The leadership of Anu Aga also brought attention to issues of corporate philanthropy and women in Indian business.
