Kapil Sharma rose to national fame through the stand-up competition The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and later headlined Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV from 2013. After ending that association in early 2016, he launched The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television, retaining the format of a fictional middle-class household interacting with film celebrities promoting their releases.
Each episode typically opens with a stand-up segment by Kapil Sharma addressing the studio audience. This is followed by sketch sequences featuring a recurring ensemble of comic characters, and an extended interview with one or more celebrity guests. Audience members are often invited on stage for short comedic exchanges. The set is designed as a stylised mohalla or living room, with a live band providing musical interludes.
The show is filmed at studios in Film City and other production facilities in Mumbai. Episodes are typically taped before a live audience and broadcast on weekend prime-time slots. K9 Films, owned by Kapil Sharma, has held principal production responsibility, with Banijay Asia joining for later seasons. The show has aired in two-episode weekend formats during most of its run.
The Kapil Sharma Show has been one of the most-watched non-fiction Hindi entertainment programmes on Indian television, regularly leading the BARC India ratings within the comedy category during its peak seasons. It has served as a major promotional platform for Hindi films, with most major theatrical releases featuring lead actors as guests in the lead-up to opening weekends. The programme has won multiple Indian Television Academy Awards and Indian Telly Awards in comedy categories.
Critics have noted the show's reliance on broad, slapstick humour and cross-dressing characters, while its supporters cite its mass appeal across age groups and its role in mainstreaming stand-up comedy on Indian television. Episodes featuring sportspersons, including members of the India national cricket team, and political figures have drawn particular attention.
The show has been subject to public attention over disputes among cast members, notably the 2017 fallout between Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover, which contributed to a temporary halt in production. Sharma's personal health and behavioural concerns during 2017–2018 were also widely reported in the Indian press and impacted the show's continuity.
