Seasons

Season 1 (2019)

The first season comprises ten episodes and was released on 20 September 2019. The plot revolves around a terror plot involving a planned attack referred to as "Mission Zulfiqar", with sequences shot across Mumbai, Kashmir and Kerala. The season foregrounds the rise of religious extremism and the operational challenges faced by Indian intelligence agencies.

Season 2 (2021)

The second season, consisting of nine episodes, premiered on 4 June 2021. Its principal storyline shifts to a Tamil separatist conflict, with a Sri Lankan Tamil rebel, Raji, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, as the central antagonist. Significant portions were filmed in Chennai. The season's release was preceded by debate over its portrayal of Tamil characters; the makers stated that the show is a work of fiction and that it does not target any community.

Production

The series is produced under Raj & DK's banner D2R Films for Amazon Prime Video. Cinematography for the first season was handled by Cameron Eric Bryson, while the score and theme music were composed by Sachin–Jigar, Ketan Sodha and Kanish Sharma. Editing was overseen by Sumeet Kotian. The action sequences were choreographed to use practical, grounded combat instead of stylised set-pieces.

Reception

Both seasons received positive reviews from Indian critics, who highlighted Manoj Bajpayee's performance, the tonal balance between domestic comedy and espionage tension, and the writing of Raj & DK with co-writers Suman Kumar and Sumit Arora. The show was widely cited as one of the breakout Indian streaming productions of its release year and has been credited with broadening mainstream Hindi audiences' interest in long-form streaming drama.

Awards and recognition

The Family Man has received recognition at several Indian industry awards for streaming content, including honours at the Filmfare OTT Awards and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, with nominations and wins for Manoj Bajpayee in lead acting categories and for Raj & DK in directing and writing categories.

Significance

The series is regarded as a significant entry in the Indian streaming era that began in the late 2010s, alongside titles such as Sacred Games and Mirzapur. It contributed to establishing Amazon Prime Video as a major platform for Hindi original content in India and demonstrated commercial viability for serialised, character-driven thrillers rooted in contemporary Indian geopolitics. The character of Srikant Tiwari has been widely cited as among the most popular small-screen protagonists in recent Indian television.
