It is connected to the rest of the city by the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), the Inner Ring Road, and the Velachery–Tharamani Link Road. The Pallikaranai marshland, an ecologically significant wetland, lies to the south of the suburb.
Tharamani is served by the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), with Tharamani station providing rail connectivity to Velachery, Park Town, and Chennai Beach. The suburb is also accessible through bus routes operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The proximity of OMR provides road links to the IT clusters at Sholinganallur and beyond.
Tharamani is associated with several institutions of national importance, which have contributed to its identity as a centre for research and technology:
Originally a sparsely populated area on the outskirts of Madras, Tharamani saw rapid transformation from the late 1990s onward with the development of the IT corridor along OMR. The opening of Tidel Park in the early 2000s and the subsequent growth of the IIT Madras Research Park accelerated its emergence as a knowledge and technology cluster. Residential development has expanded alongside, with apartment complexes and gated communities supplementing older housing colonies.
