Thane district is bordered by Palghar district to the north and west, Nashik district to the north-east, Ahmednagar district to the east, Pune district to the south-east, and Raigad district to the south. The Arabian Sea coast and creeks such as the Thane Creek and Ulhas estuary form a part of its western fringe.
The terrain is varied: the western and central parts are dominated by coastal plains, creeks and the urbanised belt of the MMR, while the eastern parts rise into the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) ranges. The Ulhas and Vaitarna river systems drain much of the district.
The district has undergone significant reorganisation:
Following the 2014 bifurcation, Thane district comprises talukas including Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Murbad and Shahapur. The district contains several large municipal corporations and councils, among them the Thane Municipal Corporation, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (parts), Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, and the Ambernath and Kulgaon-Badlapur councils.
Thane district has a diversified economy that combines agriculture in its eastern talukas with one of the densest industrial belts in India along the Mumbai-Nashik and Mumbai-Pune corridors. Major industrial zones include those at Wagle Estate, Dombivli MIDC, Ambernath MIDC, Bhiwandi (a national hub for warehousing, logistics and powerlooms) and Tarapur (historically). Sectors well represented include chemicals, engineering, pharmaceuticals, textiles, IT services and real estate.
The district is a critical transport node:
Thane is among the most populous districts of Maharashtra and includes both highly urbanised cities and tribal-majority rural pockets in talukas such as Murbad and Shahapur. Marathi is the principal language, with significant Hindi, Gujarati and Urdu-speaking populations in the urban areas. Notable communities include Agri, Koli, Warli and Katkari, the last two being among the Adivasi groups of the region.
As the gateway between Mumbai and the rest of mainland Maharashtra, Thane district plays a central role in the economy and demographics of the MMR. It absorbs much of the population overflow from Mumbai, hosts large-scale logistics and manufacturing infrastructure, and provides essential water resources—through reservoirs such as Tansa, Bhatsa and Modak Sagar—to the Mumbai metropolitan area.
