Thaman S, also known as S. S. Thaman, Ghibran Thaman or simply Thaman, is an Indian music composer, singer and percussionist who works predominantly in Telugu cinema, with credits in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films. He began his career as a session musician and rhythm programmer before transitioning to a full-fledged film composer in the late 2000s. He is the son of veteran percussionist Ghantasala Sivakumar, popularly known as Ghantasala Saalaam, and is associated with a large catalogue of Telugu mass and commercial film soundtracks.

Thaman was born into a family with strong roots in South Indian film music. His father, Ghantasala Sivakumar, worked as a rhythm and percussion artist with several leading composers in the Telugu and Tamil industries, which exposed Thaman to film studios and recording sessions from a young age. He trained primarily as a percussionist and later took up keyboard programming, eventually working as a rhythm programmer and assistant in the music teams of senior composers in Chennai.
Before becoming an independent composer, Thaman worked extensively as a percussionist and arranger on film recordings, contributing rhythm and beats to numerous soundtracks. This phase shaped his signature emphasis on percussion-driven, high-tempo arrangements.
Thaman's debut as an independent music director came with the Telugu film Kick (2009), directed by Surender Reddy and starring Ravi Teja. The soundtrack, including songs such as "Kevvu Keka", became a popular success and established him as a sought-after composer for mass-oriented commercial films.
Following Kick, Thaman composed for a long list of Telugu films, becoming closely associated with star-driven commercial productions. His work spans projects with leading Telugu actors including Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, NTR Jr., Ram Charan, Ravi Teja, Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh. Notable Telugu soundtracks credited to him include Brindavanam, Dookudu, Businessman, Race Gurram, S/O Satyamurthy, Sarrainodu, Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Sarkaru Vaari Paata and Bhola Shankar, among others.
In Tamil cinema, Thaman composed for films such as Siruthai, Vengai, Vandhaan Vendraan, Vettai and Thuppakki, the last directed by A. R. Murugadoss and starring Vijay. He has also worked on Kannada and Malayalam projects and on the Hindi-dubbed and bilingual versions of his Telugu films.
Thaman regularly performs as a singer and stage artist, conducting live concerts of his film music in India and abroad. He frequently provides playback for his own compositions.
Thaman's music is characterised by strong percussion lines, electronic dance-music influences, brass-led mass numbers and heavy use of synthesised orchestration. His soundtracks are often built around energetic title songs and intro themes designed for star entries in commercial cinema, alongside melodic duets and folk-flavoured numbers.
Thaman received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020), directed by Trivikram Srinivas. He has also been nominated for and received Filmfare Awards South, SIIMA Awards and other regional honours for his work in Telugu cinema across multiple years.
Within Telugu cinema, Thaman is regarded as one of the most prolific composers of the 2010s and 2020s, with a high output of soundtracks for tentpole star vehicles. His success illustrates the growing role of rhythm- and production-driven film music in mainstream South Indian cinema, building on the legacies of earlier composers such as Devi Sri Prasad and M. M. Keeravani.
