The National Centre for the Performing Arts was established in 1969 as a multi-venue cultural institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of India's diverse artistic heritage as well as to international performing arts. The NCPA campus at Nariman Point houses several auditoria of varying capacities, of which the Tata Theatre is among the best known. The theatre takes its name from the Tata group, whose philanthropic arms have been long-standing patrons of the NCPA.
The Tata Theatre is designed as a fan-shaped auditorium, a layout intended to bring the audience close to the stage and to suit a wide range of acoustic performances, including Indian classical music, Western classical music, dance recitals and drama.
