The company was established as Tata Sky, a joint venture between the Tata Group and STAR Group (then owned by News Corporation, later Twenty-First Century Fox). Following the acquisition of Twenty-First Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company, the foreign stake passed to Disney. The service uses satellite transmission combined with a set-top box installed at the subscriber's premises to deliver television channels and interactive content.
Tata Play provides a wide selection of standard-definition and high-definition channels across genres including news, entertainment, sports, movies, regional languages, devotional, music and infotainment. Subscribers can choose from à la carte channels and pre-packaged bouquets compliant with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) framework for broadcasting and cable services.
Through Tata Play Binge, the company aggregates subscriptions to several streaming applications into a single bill, accessible via the set-top box, mobile applications and connected devices.
Tata Play Fiber delivers fibre-to-the-home internet connectivity in select Indian cities, complementing the company's video services.
Tata Play is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern DTH industry in India, contributing to the expansion of pay television beyond cable networks and to the introduction of services such as HD broadcasting, recording and interactive applications in Indian homes. Its rebranding marks the broader convergence of traditional satellite television operators with internet-based video distribution.
