TISS was founded in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, established with funding from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. It was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1944. The institute pioneered formal training in social work in India, drawing on both Indian social realities and international frameworks of professional practice.
In 1964, TISS was declared a Deemed University by the Government of India under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, enabling it to award its own degrees. Over subsequent decades it expanded from its initial focus on social work into a multidisciplinary institution covering education, public health, law, media, disaster studies, gender, labour, and rural development.
The institute is organised into multiple schools and independent centres, including the School of Social Work, the School of Management and Labour Studies, the School of Development Studies, the School of Habitat Studies, the School of Health Systems Studies, the School of Education, the School of Media and Cultural Studies, and the School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, among others. TISS conducts research, teaching, field action, and policy advocacy across these areas.
TISS is widely regarded as a leading centre for social science research, public policy work, and professional social work training in India. Its alumni occupy positions across the development sector, government, academia, civil society organisations, the corporate human resources field, and international agencies. The institute has historically engaged with marginalised communities, labour issues, gender concerns, mental health, and rights-based development, and its field-action projects have informed policy at the state and national levels.
