The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was founded in 1945 in Mumbai by Homi J. Bhabha with support from the Tata trusts and the Government of Bombay. Over the decades, TIFR developed multiple campuses and centres across India, including the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences. The Hyderabad campus was conceived as a multidisciplinary extension to expand TIFR's research footprint in the southern part of the country.
TIFR Hyderabad runs interdisciplinary research and graduate programmes spanning the major streams of fundamental science. The institute admits students primarily into Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D. programmes, with admissions conducted through TIFR's national-level entrance examinations and interviews. Faculty work spans theoretical and experimental areas, and the campus operates laboratory and computational facilities supporting this research.
As a unit of TIFR, the Hyderabad facility contributes to India's basic-science research base under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy. It supplements TIFR's traditional strengths by providing additional capacity for graduate education, faculty research, and inter-institutional collaboration in southern India.
