Tata Chemicals was founded in 1939 with the establishment of an integrated chemicals complex at Mithapur in Gujarat, on the coast of the Gulf of Kutch. The Mithapur facility uses seawater and limestone as feedstock to produce soda ash, salt, cement and related chemicals, and remains the company's largest manufacturing site in India.
The company's establishment is closely associated with industrialist Kapilram Vakil, whose Okhamandal works were later integrated into the Tata fold. Over the decades it has evolved from a basic soda ash producer into a diversified chemicals enterprise with significant overseas assets.
This segment includes soda ash, sodium bicarbonate, salt and marine chemicals. Tata Chemicals operates soda ash facilities in India (Mithapur), the United States (Green River, Wyoming), the United Kingdom (Northwich, Cheshire) and Kenya (Magadi). The Magadi and Green River operations are based on natural soda ash (trona), while Mithapur uses the synthetic Solvay process.
The specialty products business includes silica, prebiotics, nutraceuticals and other high-value chemistry. Tata Chemicals has invested in nutritional sciences research, including operations in Pune.
Tata Chemicals introduced India's first branded iodised salt, Tata Salt, in 1983, which became one of the most widely recognised consumer brands in the country. The consumer products business, which also included pulses and spices under the Tata Sampann brand, was demerged into Tata Consumer Products in 2020 to consolidate the group's food and beverages businesses.
Tata Chemicals holds a controlling stake in Rallis India Limited, an agrochemicals company that handles much of the group's crop protection and agri-input business.
The company operates an Innovation Centre in Pune, focused on nanotechnology, biotechnology and advanced materials, supporting its specialty products and nutritional sciences pipeline.
Tata Chemicals occupies a strategic position in India's chemicals sector as one of the country's earliest large-scale chemical enterprises and a leading global soda ash producer.
