Tara

Overview

Anuradha (born 4 March 1965), known by her stage name Tara, is an Indian actress, television personality and politician. She has worked predominantly in Kannada cinema, in addition to a few Telugu and Tamil films, and has appeared in over 250 films across a career spanning more than four decades.

Tara made her acting debut in 1984 with the Tamil film Ingeyum Oru Gangai, followed by her Kannada debut in 1985 with Thulasidala. While she began her career in lead roles, much of her work during the 1980s and early 1990s was in second-lead and supporting parts. From the mid-1990s, she took up author-backed roles that brought her critical recognition. Among her notable Kannada films are Krama (1991), Munjaneya Manju (1993), Kanooru Heggadithi (1999), Munnudi (2000), Mathadana (2001), Hasina (2005), Cyanide (2006), Ee Bandhana (2007) and Ulidavaru Kandanthe (2014).

Tara has received a National Film Award for Best Actress for Hasina, three Karnataka State Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards South. On television, she has served on the judging panel of reality shows including Raja Rani (2021) and Nannamma Super Star (2021–22).

She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2009. In 2012, she was elected president of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, holding the position for a year, and was nominated as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, the upper house of the Karnataka legislature.
