Veterinary education in the Madras Presidency dates back to the founding of the Madras Veterinary College in 1903, which became one of the earliest institutions of its kind in India. Over the twentieth century, this college and allied teaching units were brought under the umbrella of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University after its formation in 1971. With the steady growth of livestock, dairy, and poultry sectors in Tamil Nadu, the State Government decided to constitute a dedicated university to consolidate teaching, research, and extension in veterinary and animal sciences.
TANUVAS was established under the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act, 1989, becoming the second institution of its kind in India dedicated exclusively to veterinary and animal sciences. The Madras Veterinary College, located at Vepery in Chennai, became the flagship constituent college of the new university.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Its principal academic streams include:
Constituent and affiliated institutions include the Madras Veterinary College in Chennai, the Veterinary College and Research Institute at Namakkal, similar institutes at Tirunelveli, Orathanadu and Tirupathur, the College of Poultry Production and Management at Hosur, and the Fisheries College and Research Institute at Thoothukudi and Ponneri. The university also operates a network of research stations, livestock farms, and extension centres across Tamil Nadu.
TANUVAS conducts research on indigenous livestock breeds, animal nutrition, veterinary biotechnology, vaccine development, dairy product technology, and aquaculture. It has produced vaccines and diagnostic kits for use in the state's animal health programmes and runs extension activities aimed at farmers, including training in cattle and poultry rearing, fodder cultivation, and small-scale dairying.
As the apex institution for veterinary and animal sciences in Tamil Nadu, TANUVAS plays a central role in supporting the state's livestock economy, which contributes significantly to rural livelihoods. It trains the bulk of the state's veterinarians and animal husbandry professionals and works closely with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
