Background

Private universities in Tamil Nadu are constituted through specific Acts passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which empower a sponsoring body to set up an autonomous, self-financing institution within the framework laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Takshashila University was established under this model, joining a growing number of private universities that have been set up across Tamil Nadu since the state began authorising such institutions.

The university takes its name from the ancient seat of learning at Takshashila (Taxila), historically considered one of the earliest centres of higher education in the Indian subcontinent.

Location and setting

The campus is located in Viluppuram district in the northern part of Tamil Nadu. Viluppuram is a major junction on the Chennai–Tiruchirappalli rail and road corridor, which provides connectivity to Chennai, Puducherry, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai and Salem.

Academics

As a state private university, Takshashila University is empowered to award its own degrees in disciplines approved by its statutes, subject to UGC regulations and, where applicable, approvals from professional regulatory bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for technical and management programmes.

Significance

The institution forms part of the expansion of private higher education in Tamil Nadu, a state that hosts one of the largest concentrations of universities and colleges in India. Universities established in semi-urban districts such as Viluppuram contribute to widening access to professional and higher education outside the major metropolitan centres of Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai.
