The company traces its origins to the news production unit of the India Today Group, founded by Aroon Purie. During the 1990s, the group produced a daily Hindi news capsule called Aaj Tak, which was telecast on Doordarshan's DD Metro channel and built a strong audience for its concise, contemporary style of news presentation.
Following the success of this programme, TV Today Network was structured as a separate broadcasting entity to launch standalone satellite channels. Aaj Tak was relaunched as a 24-hour Hindi news channel on 31 December 2000, becoming one of the earliest dedicated Hindi news channels in India.
The network distributes its channels via cable, DTH platforms and digital streaming, and operates linked online news properties under the Aaj Tak and India Today brands. Its programming includes daily news bulletins, primetime debates, election coverage, business news segments and special-event broadcasts. The annual India Today Conclave, organised by the parent group, often features extensive coverage on the network's channels.
TV Today Network is considered one of the pioneers of private 24-hour news broadcasting in India. Aaj Tak has consistently ranked among the most-watched Hindi news channels in the country across the BARC viewership ratings system, and the network's English channel has been a prominent voice in national news television. The group's journalists, anchors and editorial leadership have played a notable role in shaping post-2000 Indian television journalism.
