SVNIRTAR functions as a multidisciplinary centre offering clinical services, professional training, and applied research aimed at the comprehensive rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. The institute provides integrated services that combine medical management, surgical intervention, prosthetic and orthotic fitment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and vocational counselling.
The institute conducts long-term academic courses recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and affiliated to Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. The programmes typically include:
SVNIRTAR operates outpatient and inpatient services, with specialised units for orthopaedic rehabilitation, paediatric care including cerebral palsy and poliomyelitis, spinal cord injury management, and amputee rehabilitation. The institute manufactures and fits prosthetic limbs, orthotic appliances, and mobility aids for patients drawn from across Odisha and neighbouring states. Periodic rural rehabilitation camps and assessment camps are also organised in collaboration with state agencies and non-governmental organisations.
Research at the institute concentrates on disability prevention, assistive technology, biomechanics, gait analysis, and outcome studies in physical rehabilitation. Faculty and students contribute to peer-reviewed literature in rehabilitation sciences and undertake collaborative projects with other national institutes under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
As one of the seven national institutes working under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), SVNIRTAR plays a central role in eastern India, complementing the work of sister institutes such as the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities, the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities, and the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities. The institute contributes to human resource development in a sector that has historically faced an acute shortage of trained rehabilitation professionals in India.
