Geography

Sursand is situated on the alluvial plains of the Ganga basin in north Bihar, an area drained by tributaries of the Bagmati and Lakhandei rivers. The terrain is flat and largely agricultural, and the locality lies a short distance south of the India–Nepal border. The wider Sitamarhi district is bounded by Nepal to the north, Madhubani district to the east, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur to the south, and Sheohar and East Champaran to the west.

Administration

Sursand functions as the headquarters of the Sursand block, one of the community development blocks that make up Sitamarhi district. The block consists of several gram panchayats and revenue villages administered through the panchayati raj system, with a Block Development Officer (BDO) and Circle Officer overseeing development and revenue functions. For state legislative purposes, the area falls within the Sursand Vidhan Sabha constituency, which forms part of the Sitamarhi Lok Sabha constituency.

Economy

The local economy is predominantly agrarian. Paddy, wheat, maize, pulses, sugarcane and seasonal vegetables are the principal crops, supported by the fertile alluvial soils and monsoon-fed irrigation typical of the Mithila plain. Small-scale trade, weekly markets (haats), dairying and cross-border commerce with Nepal contribute to local livelihoods.

Transport

Sursand is connected by road to Sitamarhi town, the district headquarters, and to other settlements in the region. The nearest major railway hub is Sitamarhi Junction on the East Central Railway, which provides links to Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and onwards to Patna.

Culture

The town shares the cultural heritage of Mithila, with Maithili spoken alongside Hindi. Festivals such as Chhath, Holi, Durga Puja, Vivaha Panchami and Sita Navami are widely observed, the last two being particularly significant in Sitamarhi district, which is traditionally associated with the birthplace of Sita in the Ramayana.
