His work as an impressionist and a stage performer fed into a steady screen career marked by a distinctive comic timing and mimicry. During this period, he won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Comedian on three occasions — in 2009, 2010 and 2013.
From the mid-2010s, Suraj's filmography moved towards character parts and leading roles, broadening his image beyond comedy. In 2013, he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his lead performance in Perariyathavar, a milestone that signalled his arrival as a serious dramatic actor.
In 2019, he received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performances in Android Kunjappan Version 5.25 and Vikruthi, further consolidating his standing as a leading performer in Malayalam cinema.
Suraj Venjaramoodu's career illustrates a notable transition within Malayalam cinema, where a performer typecast in comic roles successfully reinvented himself as a leading dramatic actor. His National Film Award win for Perariyathavar was widely seen as a turning point, and his subsequent Best Actor recognition at the Kerala State Film Awards confirmed his versatility across genres.
