Sunny Deol is an Indian film actor, director, producer, and politician known primarily for his work in Hindi cinema. The son of veteran actor Dharmendra, he made his acting debut in 1983 and went on to become one of the leading male stars of Bollywood during the late 1980s and 1990s. He is recognised for his performances in action and drama films, and is particularly associated with intense, patriotic, and rural-themed roles.

Sunny Deol was born Ajay Singh Deol on 19 October 1956 in Sahnewal in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. He belongs to a Punjabi Jat family and is the elder son of Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. His younger brother Bobby Deol is also a Hindi film actor. Deol received part of his schooling in India and later trained in acting at the Old Vic Theatre School in the United Kingdom before entering the film industry.
Deol made his acting debut in Betaab (1983), directed by Rahul Rawail and produced by Bhim Singhh, opposite Amrita Singh. The film was a major commercial success and earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor. He followed this with films such as Sunny (1984) and Manzil Manzil (1984).
His role as a wronged lover in Rajkumar Santoshi's Ghayal (1990) brought him the National Film Award – Special Mention and the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. He continued in similar action and drama roles in films including Tridev (1989), Vishwatma (1992), Damini (1993) and Jeet (1996). For his portrayal of the lawyer Govind Srivastava in Damini – Lightning (1993), directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, he received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Award.
In 1997, Deol starred in J. P. Dutta's war film Border, based on the Battle of Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, where he played Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri. The film was a major commercial success.
His role as Tara Singh in Anil Sharma's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time. He reprised the role in the sequel Gadar 2 (2023), which also achieved widespread commercial success.
Deol turned director with Dillagi (1999), which also starred his brother Bobby Deol. He launched the production banner Vijayta Films, under which he later directed Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (2019), introducing his elder son Karan Deol as an actor.
Sunny Deol joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in April 2019. In the 2019 Indian general election, he contested from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab and won, defeating the Indian National Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar. He served as Member of Parliament for Gurdaspur from 2019 to 2024. He did not contest the 2024 general election.
Sunny Deol is regarded as one of the prominent action heroes of Hindi cinema, with a screen image built around themes of justice, honour, and Indian patriotism. His pairing with directors such as Rajkumar Santoshi, J. P. Dutta and Anil Sharma produced several films that became commercially and culturally significant. The character of Tara Singh in the Gadar series, in particular, has had a lasting cultural footprint in Indian popular cinema. His brief political career as an MP from Punjab marked the entry of another member of the Deol family into public life.
Sunny Deol is married to Pooja Deol, and the couple have two sons, Karan Deol and Rajveer Deol, both of whom have entered Hindi cinema as actors. He generally maintains a low public profile in matters outside his professional work.
