Banerjee was active during a period in which Indian domestic cricket, organised principally around the Ranji Trophy and other tournaments conducted under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was steadily expanding. Umpires of his generation officiated in first-class fixtures across the country, working under the auspices of state cricket associations and the national board.
As an umpire, Banerjee belonged to the corps of match officials who supported the conduct of Indian cricket through the mid-twentieth century. Umpires in this era played a key role in standardising the application of the Laws of Cricket in domestic competition in India.
