Sunidhi Chauhan was born in New Delhi to Dushyant Kumar Chauhan. She began performing as a child artist at local events and stage shows in Delhi. At the age of thirteen, she came to wider notice after winning the first season of the television singing competition Meri Awaz Suno in 1996, a contest aired on Doordarshan that served as a launchpad for several young singers of her generation.
Following her television win, Chauhan recorded her first film song for the soundtrack of Shastra (1996), composed by Kalyanji–Anandji. Her early career involved scattered film assignments while she trained further in classical music. The turning point came with Ismail Darbar's composition "Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi" for Ram Gopal Varma's Mast (1999), which earned her wide critical attention.
Through the 2000s, Chauhan became a leading playback voice for upbeat dance numbers as well as ballads. Notable songs from this period include "Mehboob Mere" from Fiza (2000), "Dhoom Machale" from Dhoom (2004), "Beedi" from Omkara (2006), "Aaja Nachle" from Aaja Nachle (2007), and "Sajnaaji Vaari" from Honeymoon Travels Pvt.
