Sun Pharma was founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi in Vapi, Gujarat, initially with a small portfolio of psychiatry products. The company expanded steadily into other chronic-care therapy segments and over the following decades grew into a diversified pharmaceutical major through a combination of organic growth, in-licensing arrangements and a series of domestic and international acquisitions.
The company operates a global network of manufacturing facilities and research centres, supplying formulations and APIs to markets in India, the United States, emerging markets and Western Europe. Its specialty business focuses on innovative and differentiated branded products, particularly in dermatology and ophthalmology.
Sun Pharma's operations span formulations, APIs and specialty pharmaceuticals. Its formulations business covers a wide range of dosage forms, while the API business supports both captive consumption and external sales. The specialty segment markets branded innovative products primarily in the United States and select global markets.
The company maintains manufacturing plants across multiple Indian states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir, along with international sites in countries such as the United States, Israel, Hungary, Romania, Canada, Bangladesh and others acquired through global expansion.
Sun Pharma operates research centres in India and overseas, focusing on generic product development, complex generics, novel drug delivery systems and specialty products. Innovative new chemical entity research is largely housed under its sister company, Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC), which was demerged from the parent in 2007.
Dilip Shanghvi serves as the Managing Director and continues to be the company's largest shareholder through promoter holdings. The board includes a mix of executive and independent directors overseeing the company's global operations.
Sun Pharma is widely regarded as a flagship of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. Its acquisition of Ranbaxy Laboratories was one of the most significant consolidation events in Indian pharma history and elevated the combined entity's standing among the top generic drugmakers worldwide. The company is a constituent of major Indian equity indices and is closely tracked as a bellwether of the Indian pharmaceutical sector.
