Subhadra

Overview

Subhadra (Sanskrit: सुभद्रा, Subhadrā, meaning 'auspicious') is a figure in Hindu tradition, particularly revered within Vaishnavism as the sister of the deities Krishna and Balarama. She features in ancient Hindu scriptures, including the epic Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana.

According to these texts, Subhadra is a princess of the Vrishni clan and the daughter of Vasudeva. She is described as the wife of the Pandava prince Arjuna and the mother of Abhimanyu, whose lineage continues through Parikshit in the narrative tradition of the Mahabharata.

Subhadra is also venerated as part of the triad of deities worshipped at the Jagannath Temple at Puri, alongside Krishna (in the form of Jagannatha) and Balarama (also known as Balabhadra). She holds a central place in the temple's iconography and ritual life. During the annual Ratha Yatra, one of the three chariots in the procession is dedicated to her.
