Thompson hails from Northern Ireland and represents the Ireland national cricket team. As an all-rounder, he combines left-handed batting with right-arm medium-fast bowling.
In May 2018, Thompson was selected as one of the eleven cricketers to play in Ireland's first ever Test match, against Pakistan. The fixture marked Ireland's elevation to the highest format of international cricket and is regarded as a landmark in Irish sporting history.
In December 2018, Thompson was named among nineteen players awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland for the 2019 season. In January 2020, he again received a central contract, as one of nineteen players for that year — notable as the first year in which Cricket Ireland awarded all contracts on a full-time basis.
Thompson's place in the Ireland XI for the country's first Test match secures his name in the historical record of Irish cricket. His repeated inclusion among Cricket Ireland's centrally contracted players reflects his sustained role within the national set-up during a period of significant transition in Irish cricket, including the move to full-time professional contracts.
