The university grew out of St. Joseph's College, an institution that had operated in the Dimapur region as a centre for higher education before being upgraded to university status. The campus is situated at Chümoukedima, a town in Chümoukedima district that has developed as an educational and administrative hub adjoining Dimapur, Nagaland's largest urban centre.
As a state private university, St. Joseph University is recognised by the Government of Nagaland and is empowered to award its own degrees. It is among a small number of universities operating in Nagaland, a state where higher education has historically been delivered through colleges affiliated to Nagaland University and other external institutions.
The university organises its teaching through faculties and departments covering arts, science, commerce, and management, along with programmes in education and allied professional fields. Courses are offered at undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels.
St. Joseph University contributes to the expansion of higher education access in Nagaland and the wider North East region, providing a degree-granting institution close to the commercial centre of Dimapur. Its establishment reflects the broader role of Christian missionary and church-run organisations in shaping schooling and university education across the region.
