SVIMS offers postgraduate (MD, MS) and super-specialty (DM, MCh) programmes across a range of clinical and paraclinical disciplines. The institute also runs allied health and nursing courses, along with doctoral research programmes. Its hospital provides tertiary referral services in fields such as cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, endocrinology, medical oncology, surgical gastroenterology and related super-specialties.
In addition to direct patient care and teaching, the institute houses departments dedicated to research in clinical and basic medical sciences, and it conducts community outreach programmes for patients from surrounding rural areas in southern Andhra Pradesh.
As one of the principal super-specialty public medical institutions in southern Andhra Pradesh, SVIMS plays an important role in providing advanced healthcare to patients from Tirupati, Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapur, Nellore and adjoining districts, as well as parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Its location near the pilgrimage centre of Tirumala also gives it a distinctive role in serving pilgrims requiring medical attention.
