The institution traces its origins to the health-care and educational initiatives of the Sri Guru Ram Das Charitable Hospital Trust, which has long operated medical and dental colleges along with an attached teaching hospital at Vallah, on the outskirts of Amritsar. The university was subsequently constituted as a private university under a Punjab state legislation, bringing the existing medical, dental and nursing colleges together under a single multi-faculty academic umbrella focused on the health sciences.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and super-specialty programmes across its constituent faculties. Its principal areas of instruction include:
The teaching hospital attached to the university serves as the principal site for clinical training and patient care, and also functions as a tertiary referral centre for the Majha region of Punjab.
The university is situated in Amritsar, a major historical and religious city in north-western Punjab. Amritsar is also home to the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and is a significant educational hub in the region, with other institutions such as Guru Nanak Dev University located in the same city.
As one of the private health sciences universities in Punjab, the institution contributes to the training of medical, dental and nursing professionals for the state and the wider northern region of India. Its integration of teaching with a charitable hospital tradition links contemporary medical education in Amritsar with the welfare ethos associated with the Sikh gurus.
