Each season begins with a set of male and female contestants, typically in their late teens to late twenties, who enter a villa located at a scenic destination. Through a combination of physical, mental and romantic tasks, contestants attempt to find a compatible partner from the opposite group. Pairings are tested at recurring elimination rounds, often called the "dumping ground" or similarly themed segments, where weaker or unmatched contestants are voted out.
Tasks are designed around themes such as trust, jealousy, attraction and compatibility. The season concludes with a final selection of the "ideal couple", who win the prize money and the title.
Splitsvilla was launched by MTV India in 2008 as a youth-oriented reality format combining the dating-show genre with competitive elimination challenges. It was conceived in the wake of the success of MTV's earlier reality property Roadies, and shares overlapping production sensibilities and audience demographics. Rannvijay Singha, who rose to prominence through Roadies, became a long-running anchor of Splitsvilla, providing continuity across seasons. Actress and former adult-film performer Sunny Leone joined as co-host from the fourth season onwards and has co-anchored several subsequent seasons.
The series is produced by Endemol Shine India for Viacom18's MTV channel. Seasons have been shot at resort locations within India and abroad, with destinations including Goa, Lonavala, Puducherry, Jaipur, Kerala and overseas sites such as Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives. The villa setting, swimming pools and outdoor task arenas form a recognisable visual identity of the show.
Splitsvilla is regarded as a defining example of Indian youth reality television. Along with Roadies and Bigg Boss, it is frequently cited in discussions of the genre's growth in the 2000s and 2010s. The show has helped launch the television careers of several contestants who went on to appear in other reality programmes, web series and films. It has also drawn commentary and criticism from media observers regarding its portrayal of gender dynamics, depictions of conflict and the dramatised nature of relationships, debates that are common to the dating reality genre in India and globally.
The franchise has expanded into digital platforms, with episodes streamed on JioCinema and previously on Voot, broadening its reach beyond linear television.
