The Spencer's brand traces its origins to a 19th-century retail business established in colonial India by John William Spencer. Over the decades the brand evolved through several ownership changes before being taken over by the RPG Enterprises group, which later split into the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. Under this ownership, Spencer's was repositioned as a modern organised retail chain catering to urban Indian consumers.
Spencer's Retail operates stores in multiple Indian states, with a notable presence in eastern, southern and northern India. Its store formats range from smaller neighbourhood outlets focused on daily essentials to large hypermarkets stocking a broad assortment across categories. The chain markets a number of private label products under its own brand alongside third-party FMCG offerings.
In 2020, Spencer's Retail acquired Natures Basket, the gourmet grocery chain previously owned by the Godrej Group, expanding its presence in the premium food retail segment.
As one of the early entrants into modern organised retail in India, Spencer's has played a role in shaping the country's supermarket and hypermarket culture. The brand is recognised for its long heritage, dating back to the British era, and continues to compete with other large Indian retail chains in a rapidly expanding market.
