Plot premise

The film follows DCP Veer Sooryavanshi, the chief of Mumbai's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), as he investigates a long-running terror conspiracy linked to the 1993 Bombay blasts and a network of sleeper cells planning a fresh strike on the city. The narrative culminates in a large-scale operation in which Sooryavanshi is joined by ACP Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) and Inspector Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh).

Production

Sooryavanshi was officially announced in March 2019, with principal photography commencing later that year. Filming took place across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangkok and parts of Rajasthan. The music was composed by a team of composers including Tanishk Bagchi, Vishal–Shekhar, Lijo George–DJ Chetas and others, while the soundtrack was released by T-Series. Cinematography was handled by Jomon T. John, with editing by Bunty Nagi.

Release

The film was originally scheduled for release on 24 March 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting closure of cinemas in India. After multiple delays, Sooryavanshi opened theatrically on 5 November 2021, coinciding with Diwali. Its release was significant as it was among the first major Hindi films to open in cinemas after the prolonged pandemic-related shutdown, and it played a notable role in the revival of theatrical footfall in India.

Reception and box office

Sooryavanshi received a mixed-to-positive response from critics, with praise directed at the action set pieces, the cameos by Devgn and Singh, and its theatrical scale, while criticism centred on the formulaic narrative. The film was a major commercial success, ranking among the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2021 and contributing to the recovery of the Indian theatrical exhibition sector after the pandemic.

Significance

Within Rohit Shetty's Cop Universe, Sooryavanshi expanded the shared continuity established by Singham and Simmba, introducing a new protagonist while bringing together previously separate storylines. The film is also frequently cited in discussions of post-pandemic theatrical recovery in India, as its performance demonstrated audience willingness to return to cinemas for big-budget Hindi releases.
