The college is situated in Nandigram, a town in the coastal Purba Medinipur district of southern West Bengal. The region is predominantly rural and agrarian, and the college plays an important role in providing access to higher education for students from surrounding villages and small towns who might otherwise need to travel to larger urban centres such as Tamluk, Haldia or Kolkata.
As a constituent affiliated college under Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, Sitananda College follows the curricula and examination structure prescribed by the university, while academic governance and recognition fall within the framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government of West Bengal's Department of Higher Education.
The institution conducts undergraduate (Bachelor's) programmes across a range of disciplines typical of general degree colleges in West Bengal, with departments in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and commerce. Teaching is organised through subject-wise departments, with both Honours and General (Programme) courses offered to students after the higher secondary stage.
Nandigram became widely known in Indian public life from 2007 onwards owing to political events centred on land acquisition disputes. Within this context, local educational institutions such as Sitananda College have continued to function as community anchors, providing instructional, examination and cultural facilities for a largely first-generation student population.
