The university is promoted by the JK Organisation, an Indian conglomerate with interests in cement, tyres, paper, and other industries. The institution is named in honour of Sir Padampat Singhania (1905–1979), a leading Indian industrialist and one of the principal figures behind the growth of the J. K. group in the twentieth century. SPSU was founded as part of the group's broader engagement with higher education in India, which has historically included support to several schools, colleges, and technical institutions.
The campus is situated on the outskirts of Udaipur, the historic lake city in southern Rajasthan. Udaipur is well connected by road, rail, and air, and houses several other educational and research institutions. The SPSU campus is residential in character, with academic blocks, hostels, sports facilities, and laboratories supporting science and engineering programmes.
SPSU organises its teaching and research through schools and departments covering areas such as:
The university awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees, and conducts research through its faculty and doctoral scholars.
As a state private university, SPSU is governed by its own Board of Management and academic bodies under the framework of the Rajasthan state act that established it. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the relevant provisions applicable to private universities in India.
SPSU forms part of the cluster of private universities that emerged in Rajasthan after the state enacted enabling legislation for private higher education in the 2000s. Its association with the JK Organisation links it to a longer tradition of industry-supported education in India, alongside other institutions associated with the group.
