Overview

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), formerly known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, is a private university located in Gangtok, Sikkim, India. It operates as a collaborative initiative between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG).

The university traces its origins to 1992, when an agreement was signed between the Government of Sikkim and MEMG. It was formally established in 1995 as the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences under The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Science Act, 1995. The institution was subsequently renamed Sikkim Manipal University in 2010 through The Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences (Amendment) Act, 2009.

In 2023, the university established the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) and began offering UGC-entitled online bachelor's and master's degree programmes in Arts, Commerce, and Computer Applications. The online offerings include MA programmes in English, Political Science and Sociology; BA programmes with combinations of English, Sociology and Political Science; and MCA, MCom and BCom programmes. These programmes are delivered through Online Manipal, the digital platform of the Manipal institutions.
