Sify traces its origins to Satyam Infoway, an internet services subsidiary of the erstwhile Satyam Computer Services. The company was established to take advantage of India's liberalised internet policy of the late 1990s, which permitted private internet service providers (ISPs) to operate in the country. Sify subsequently grew into a diversified ICT services provider, expanding from consumer internet access into enterprise networking, data centres, and cloud services.
Sify was incorporated in the late 1990s as Satyam Infoway. In 1999, it became one of the first Indian internet companies to be listed on the NASDAQ in the United States, marking a significant milestone for the Indian technology sector.
During the early 2000s, Sify operated a large network of public internet access points, branded as Sify iWay cybercafes, which played a notable role in expanding internet usage in Indian cities and smaller towns. The company also operated consumer-facing online portals and email services.
Following the global dot-com correction and changes in the Indian telecommunications market, Sify reoriented itself toward enterprise services. Its consumer broadband and portal businesses were gradually scaled down or divested, while investments in enterprise connectivity, managed services, and data centres were stepped up.
Following the corporate crisis at Satyam Computer Services in 2009, Sify's ownership transitioned away from the Satyam group. The company was subsequently controlled by entities associated with Raju Vegesna, and it continues to be listed on the NASDAQ.
In recent years Sify has expanded its data centre footprint across major Indian metropolitan regions, including Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and Kolkata, and has positioned itself as a hyperscale-ready data centre operator. The company has also developed cloud, managed security, network transformation, and digital services portfolios for enterprise clients.
Sify is significant in the history of India's information technology industry as one of the earliest commercial internet service providers and as the first Indian internet company to list on the NASDAQ. Its early role in popularising public internet access through cybercafes contributed to the spread of internet usage beyond metropolitan offices. In its later phase, Sify's data centre and enterprise network operations have made it a notable participant in India's digital infrastructure ecosystem.
