Lad was born and brought up in Mumbai and emerged through the city's age-group cricket structure, which has historically produced a number of India internationals. He represented Mumbai at junior levels before progressing to the senior side.
Lad made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. He established himself as a dependable middle-order batsman in the domestic circuit, contributing to Mumbai's campaigns in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (Twenty20).
One of the highlights of his early career came during the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy season, when Mumbai won the title; Lad was among the team's regular run-scorers, scoring multiple centuries during the campaign and contributing to the side's success at the top of the order.
Lad has been part of IPL squads. He was associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise after being signed in the player auction, and was earlier a part of the Mumbai Indians setup as a domestic player. His IPL appearances have been limited compared to his volume of domestic red-ball cricket.
Lad is known as a technically organised right-handed batsman comfortable in the middle order, with the ability to anchor an innings as well as accelerate in the limited-overs format. He bowls occasional right-arm off-spin.
Lad is part of the generation of Mumbai batsmen who carried forward the city's strong Ranji Trophy tradition during the mid-2010s. His consistency in domestic four-day cricket made him a regular in the Mumbai middle order during this period.
