The People's Education Society was established by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in 1945 with the aim of promoting higher education among the depressed classes and other communities in India. The society set up a cluster of institutions in Mumbai under the "Siddharth" name, including Siddharth College of Arts, Science and Commerce and, subsequently, Siddharth College of Law. The name "Siddharth" is a reference to Gautama Buddha, reflecting Ambedkar's engagement with Buddhist thought.
The college offers programmes in legal education leading to the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. As with other affiliated law colleges in the city, its academic programmes follow the curriculum prescribed by the affiliating university and the regulatory framework set by the Bar Council of India, which governs legal education and the legal profession in the country.
Siddharth College of Law is associated with Ambedkar's broader project of using education as an instrument of social transformation. The Siddharth group of colleges has historically served as a pathway for first-generation learners, including students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other marginalised communities, to enter professions such as law, administration and academia.
